Artist Sunjin Leaa Lee has a history of majoring in traditional Korean painting. she also create three-dimensional works using various media beyond material properties. She said, 'My art is my journey to others. I am always interested in people. I am always curious about people's appearances and their inner portraits. My ultimate goal is to paint their inner landscape.'
After graduating from Duksung Women's University in Korea, she studied at the Massachusetts college of art and design in Boston in the United States. She has taught Korean painting at several art colleges in Korea.
She had eight solo exhibitions, with funds from the Gyeonggi Art Foundation and Gachon Culture and Arts Foundation, and participated in more than 100 group exhibitions in Korea and the US, including Pohang Museum of Art, Seongnam Art Center, Kennedy Center, Russian Museum of Art, New Jersey Art Fair, and Maryland Hall.
Artist Statement
My task is to instill metamorphosis, a sense of progress and change, by seeking past and present analysis, the conflicts of acceptance and abandonment of materials and techniques, and many other characteristics of art in the East and West. The blend of Korean and Western painting methodologies creates a bizarre, yet intriguing, style. I believe the woven blend of the two worlds is a unique style that I have come to identify myself with.
I believe that the qualities of Eastern art can merge into associations with Western contemporary art through various interpretations and attempts. In other words, it is very meaningful for me to be the intermediary to convey both cultures through my work.
저희 작업들은 과거와 현재의 분석, 물질과 기법의 수용과 포기의 충돌, 그리고 동양과 서양 예술의 많은 다른 특성들을 발견함으로써, 변성, 진보와 변화의 감각을 표현하는 것입니다. 한국과 서양의 회화 방법이 혼합되어 독특하면서도 흥미로운 스타일을 연출할 수 있습니다. 저는 이러한 두 세계의 섞인 미술의 짜임새가 자신을 확인해 주는 나만의 독특한 스타일이라고 믿고 있습니다

Symptoms of nature, the duality of uncertainty and ambiguity

The work of artist SunJin of double structure is composed of complex information. It encompasses more than reality, past and present, and the same relative values. In some cases, it draws out the reasons for the phenomenon, illusion, and the fundamental nature of things. Through high spirited action reminiscent of drawing and the first-hand experience of repetitive behavior, the artist's work shows that a variety of traditional and modern stories are embraced. Of course, this duality is ambiguous and unspecified; however, these provisions are not just vague but perhaps help discover the hidden illusion that reading is the key to enjoying the artist's work.
The artist reveals that the value of expression unfolds by itself rather than telling the illusions behind the story.
The properties of both western and eastern thinking are represented and mixed in her work. Therefore, according to her work notes, it must be correctly interpreted as the structure of music such as jazz and adapted to individual interpretation. For the appreciation of works, the presence of abundant scope and space is directly the artist's merit. While Lee Sun Jin's work is seen and read, it may be more accurate to say that it is heard.
